From Pain to Perfect As A Sonographer - How Movement Training Changed My Life, Part 1

I truly love my job. Ultrasound is one of those rare occupations where you truly make a difference in the lives of people every day. I have been doing cardiac ultrasound for 18 years. I almost didn’t make it in this field. I suffered shoulder pain early on in my career that was nearly debilitating. There was a time that I thought I would have to quit my job because of the tremendous amount of pain that I was suffering from each day. The pain was as a result of doing my job. We are sharing this information with you for two major points. The points we would like to share in this article is:

  1. My story. I want share with you my story and understand how debilitated my pain was, at a certain point thinking my only option was to stop doing what I loved.

  2. We want give you hope and understanding on how I overcame those pain and injury issues at the time - and live pain free to this day. What we will share is amazing information, education that when applied can work “magic” (we’ve been able to help hundreds of folks that have felt just like I did; hopeless with no where to turn).

Before I get into my story, let me share some education and information with you that might be an eye opener. A survey conducted by the Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (SDMS) and the Healthcare Benefit Trust (HBT) revealed that 84% of the sonographers who responded were scanning while in pain that they attributed to their work activities. Twenty percent of those sonographers had an injury severe enough to end their careers. 1 This study and information was released in 1997. What’s frightening, the same information and data holds true today. An epidemic amount of sonographers live with pain/injury issues from doing their job still in 2017. Tragic. The reason we say tragic is that it doesn’t have to be that way. Enough stat’s, let me share with you my story and how I was able to overcome the debilitating shoulder pain that afflicted me early on in my career.

Our hope is that as we reach out, we can help lead a movement that builds a preventative force for sonographers that have not reached the point of pain and body injury. But if it's past the point of prevention, I can tell you from experience it's still possible to overcome severe joint and pain issues. You can get back to a place where you can scan without pain. Obviously if you are not experiencing pain or injury YET, we want to educate you on how to keep that from happening.

I was able to overcome my pain and injury issues with what really is a simple formula. My big secret - I learned “Movement Training” which allowed me to adjust the way I moved and trained my body to withstand the rigors of what I asked it to do. More simply put, I did simple movements that included lengthening and strengthening certain body segments (body parts!) and how to train them the RIGHT way.

When you train movement it involves a body concept. The body works together as a unit. Understanding how the body units work with each other makes it easy to see why movement training works. I was blessed to be able to consult and work with my best friend, Mark (Coach Rozy) Roozen. Coach Rozy has been in the Strength and Conditioning business for over 30 years, at the NFL and Olympic level, as well as Division 1 college, high school, middle school, as well as geriatric population. His passion and wealth of knowledge are unmatched.

When I was terrified and going through my pain/injury issues, I reached out to Rozy and asked if he could help me. After some in-depth conversations, Coach Rozy looked at my job and what i was asking my body to do day in and day out. How did I use my body to perform the rigors of sonography? What positions did I need to work from? Why did I do certain movement patterns certain ways? After looking at all the variables, Rozy explained to my why my shoulders were killing me. Rozy also told me that If I did what he said, how he said to do it, my shoulders would stop hurting me. I was willing to do whatever it took to cure my issues. Rozy’s knowledge of the body and all of its components being able to worked together is what has made him a leader in his profession.

With the knowledge from our talks, his knowledge of body movement, Rozy developed an exercise and stretching program that was easy follow and very easy to do, even with my hectic schedule. I also got education and instruction on wholeness and wellness for the rest of my body. A short time after implementing his education, MY SHOULDER PAIN WENT AWAY!! I have been doing my job pain free ever since!

For those saying to themselves; I work out or I have done physical therapy, I’ve tried A-B-C Training - AND IT DOESN'T WORK. Let me share this with you - THROUGH THIS, BEFORE I CONNECTED WITH ROZY - I WAS WORKING OUT! I was in pretty good shape at the time of my pain and injury. I played football at all levels throughout my career; high school, college, and a stint in Europe. Because of that I knew how to workout----as a football player. The problem is that I was asking my body to do different things than what is required of a football player. I had to change my mentality and thought process when I started to do THE RIGHT MOVES with Coach Rozy. Rozy taught me a new way of stretching and a new way of exercising. Within a short period of time, my shoulder pain was gone As I mentioned, I have literally been pain free ever since.

There were two win’s that I got for myself; 1) I got to worry about the humdrum of life again; taking care of the lawn, taking my kids to soccer practice and other events and back full force at work. 2) I took active control of my issue, reached out to find answers and got amazing results. It was truly a life-changing experience.

Now I know for some of you out there, the E-Word (EXERCISE) is a four letter word. Who wants to work all day, have to go to the gym for hours each week and fit working out in with the long list of “to do’s” that most of us have. Doesn’t sound like much fun. The good news is that you don’t have to become a “gym rat”, spend hours and hours in training, and do tons of work each week if you don’t want to. If you want to go to the gym and exercise like the next Ninja Warrior contestant, by all means go ahead and go for it. “Movement Training” is what you make of it. You can really put in a few minutes a day and start to feel relief. When you start to do the right things the right way amazing things will happen.

From this simple but incredible beginning came an enormous amount of success for Rozy and I. After my success in eliminating my pain/injury issues, I had a bright idea one day to expand my success and see if others had the same issue. Little did I know at the time that the problem was epidemic and it was worldwide. Rozy and I did a webinar and got published on the subject. We received e mails from sonographers all over the world looking for relief from their pain and injury issues. We were blown away. At that time we had no idea the problem was as massive as it was. From that point on, our goal has been of educating sonographers and others that are living in pain.

Our goal is to offer a simple plan, that anyone regardless of age or ability can follow to bring about wellness as well as let each person be in control of their body. Part of our future series will focus on 3 key areas.

  • Pattern movement: evaluation and exercise
  • Progression of performance: movement from pain to pleasure
  • Program design: what do you do and when do you do it

We are excited to be involved with echo-web and are thrilled that Rick Duncan of Echo-Web has given us this incredible opportunity. There will be more in this first series of articles so stay tuned.
